AI Won’t Fix an Enterprise Designed for the Past

“If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.”

That may describe much of the debate about the future of business today.

There are two dominant responses to a world that is becoming faster, more complex and less predictable.

The first is to improve the old model - Make existing processes faster. Streamline governance. Improve planning. Optimize organizations. Strengthen execution.

The problem is that these management approaches were largely designed for a slower, more predictable world, where control mattered more than adaptability.

The second response is to add AI everywhere and as quickly as possible. AI Agents, automation, fewer people and more autonomous execution.

This risks being an even bigger mistake - using powerful new technology to accelerate an enterprise that was never designed for the world it now operates in.

AI can highlight a flawed Operating Model just as easily as it can improve one.

Neither approach addresses the fundamental problem, that the enterprise itself was designed for a different world.

Think of an old building designed for very different demands. You can repaint it, streamline how people move through it and make better use of the rooms or you can fill it with smart technology like sensors, automation and AI.

However, if the foundations, structure and layout no longer meet what is required, neither approach solves the underlying problem. In fact, adding more technology and pushing more activity through it may simply expose its weaknesses faster.

At some point, you have to stop renovating and rethink the architecture.

The same is true of the enterprise.

So, we should stop asking:

“How do we make the existing model faster?” Or “Where can we deploy AI?”

We should start with:

“How would we design an enterprise for the world we are entering?”

The problem is not AI or a matter of process improvement.

It’s an enterprise design problem.
