The Future-Ready CEO Must Think Like an Operator, an Investor and an Entrepreneur

For decades, businesses followed a relatively predictable lifecycle.

Start up - Grow - Mature - Optimize - Decline - Reinvent or break up.

Each stage had its own priorities, skills and often its own type of leader. Entrepreneurs built businesses. Corporate executives ran them. Private Equity firms optimized or restructured them. Venture Capital firms backed the next generation. Acceleration is collapsing these stages together.

Today's enterprise must simultaneously: Operate its existing business efficiently, optimize assets and eliminate activities that no longer create value and innovate to build the businesses of tomorrow. Think of it like flying an aircraft while redesigning its engines and building its replacement, all at the same time.

This creates a fundamentally different leadership challenge. The CEO must think like an Operator, a Private Equity investor and a Venture Capitalist simultaneously.

Separating these responsibilities into different teams might seem sensible, but it risks creating competing priorities, fragmented decisions and disconnected strategies.

Centralizing everything with a few senior leaders can create overload and bottlenecks.

Neither approach is designed for continuous acceleration. What leaders need is a shared view of the entire enterprise, one that connects today's performance with tomorrow's possibilities. A way to see how the business works, understand dependencies, simulate alternatives and make decisions across multiple time horizons.

That is what a Digital Operating Model should provide. Not simply a description of the business, but a living enterprise asset that enables leaders and Human and AI Agents to operate, optimize and reinvent the organization together.

In an accelerating world, the challenge is no longer managing the business through its lifecycle. It's managing multiple lifecycles at once.
