Most companies ask for an ownership mindset but never hand over the keys

“We want our people to think and act like the company owners.”
This is what many company leaders pronoun on a regular basis. This sounds great but is completely hollow in most companies.
If employees are not given the keys, they have no visibility, no control over decisions and no understanding of how the business actually works end-to-end.
So what are they really owning? Their inbox? You can’t ask for ownership while running a black box. You can’t expect accountability without giving agency.
Real ownership comes from giving people a clear, visible system to operate within, where they understand the flow, see the impact of their actions, and can actually change outcomes.
Until then, “act like an owner” is just corporate jargon.
If you want your employees to have ownership, design for it.
