The Future-Ready Operating Model Series Part 1: A Multi-Dimensional Enterprise Network

The world is accelerating. Strategy must accelerate to keep pace with the world. In turn, operations must accelerate to keep pace with strategy. This represents one of the biggest challenges in business management today.

Unfortunately, traditional organizational design theory is not built for this reality. As enterprises became more complex, organizations evolved primarily to manage that complexity. Processes were mapped. Organizational charts were created. Scorecards were developed. Technologies such as ERP and Business Intelligence systems added structure and visibility. But these approaches still leave organizations fragmented, disconnected, and slow to evolve. They create order, but not agility.

At their core, enterprises can be described through three primary dimensions: process (the work), roles (who performs it), and measures (what success looks like). By integrating these dimensions at a granular level into what we term a TOMU (Tri-Axial Operating Model Unit), and linking TOMUs together into interconnected networks, a multidimensional model of the enterprise emerges.

Once digitized, this Operating Model becomes a living asset, and enables seamless day-to-day operations, while also empowering employees to manage and improve their own areas, and at the same time maintaining alignment with the broader enterprise. In addition, it creates a platform for simulating, testing, and evolving major operating model changes before they are implemented in the real world.
