The Real Elephant in the Room: Enterprise Complexity

Most people know the image of several individuals touching different parts of an elephant, each convinced they understand what it is because they only experience the part in front of them. Increasingly, this is how many modern enterprises operate. As organizations grew, they relied on specialization and tighter spans of control to manage complexity. Over time, however, enterprises have become so large and fragmented that very few people can see them as a whole. Everyone touching a different part of the elephant, trusting the rest still made sense. In an era of accelerating disruption, and now with Agentic AI entering the enterprise, the challenge is ensuring organizations become more visible, not more opaque, to the humans inside them. The answer lies in a deliberate science of operating models: integrated systems that make the enterprise understandable, navigable, and adaptable.
